Inspection of Ellon Academy Community Campus – October 2019
Dear parents/carers – HM Inspectors from Education Scotland will be visiting Ellon Academy to conduct an inspection during the week commencing Mon 28th October ‘19. You can find out more about inspection, from the Inspection and review documentation pages of Education Scotland’s website.
Inspection Briefing for Parents
This briefing aims to help parents to understand the inspection of a secondary school.
What happens in the inspection of your child’s secondary school?
Your child’s secondary school is to have an inspection to find out how well your child is being educated and looked after. HM Inspectors (HMI) will take account of the type and nature of the school and its young people’s needs. The inspection will be carried out by a team which may comprise of inspectors, Associate Assessors (AA), Assistant Inspectors, a Health and Nutrition Inspector and a Lay Member (LM) working for Education Scotland. The inspection published letter will highlight what the school does well and where it needs to improve.
Before the inspection
You will receive a pre-inspection questionnaire so that we can find out what you think about the school. Staff, partners and young people will also be invited to complete a questionnaire. All responses will be treated in confidence unless they raise concerns about the wellbeing of young people or staff in the school. Information given to us will be seen only by the inspection team. We will not tell anyone else where our information came from unless the wellbeing of a person is considered to be at risk.
During the inspection
- We will visit classrooms, observe learning, and talk to staff and young people about their learning.
- We may spend some time looking at your child’s work and reading his/her reports.
- We may work with your child as part of a small group or in a classroom.
After the inspection
We will publish a letter for parents on our website and send an electronic copy to the education authority or Board of Governors, and where appropriate to the chairperson of the parent council. We will also publish a document called the Summarised Inspection Findings (SIF) which provides some detail supporting the evaluations made by inspectors.
If necessary, the secondary school, with the support of the education authority or Board of Governors, will amend its school improvement plan to bring about any improvements that the letter says are needed. In some cases, we will carry out a further inspection to support the school to make improvements or to gather information about any innovative practice identified through the inspection.

Notice 20/08/2018 – School Transport Team
Just to make you all aware, we are currently having issues with our card printer which we use for pupils bus passes, and are now unable to print them. We will include a slip for any pupils who will not receive their pass to say they should use the letter as a temporary pass until the printers are fixed.
This will affect all Privilege pupils, Primary and Secondary (they get a new pass every year of a different colour) and all New P1 entitled pupils (the Secondary should have the pass from the induction days).
We can only apologies for this inconvenience, we are awaiting IT to get back to us hopefully with a fix. We will update you as soon as the issue is solved.
